75 Days… 85 Classes… Yoga, Pilates & DRIP’T

June 5, 2020.... 85 classes in 75 days.... This is a "personal best.".... In the Summer 2013, I completed 71 classes in 75 Days. Back then, I had fallen off my bike and fractured my left elbow and ring finger. My goal was to practice every day until I "healed." It was during that period Ambiya Binta and I bonded at Takoma. At that time Stephen Pleasant was the studio owner.... It took me 75 days to heal. My "practice" was my "physical therapy." "Locust Pose" was quite painful at first, but as the days passed, the pain dissipated. "Healing...

Four Dimensions of “Peace”

As we watched George Floyd’s death and see the spreading unrest as a response to his murder, a question I get is: What does it take to make peace “happen?” Based on my work with the Black Yoga Teacher Alliance’s (BYTA’s) trademarked program “Yoga as a Peace Practice,” (YAP), and YAP employs culturally relevant concepts, language, and activities that help participants translate traditional contemplative practices into contemporary lifestyles to begin the process of “creating a better world.” First, I crafted an operational definition of “peace.” “Peace” is:  A state of mental and physical ease that simultaneously revitalizes us and enhances...

Pain in the Knees Chronicles #6

Relate, Relieve, Restore I share how I have been making the “pain in my knees” an “object” of my meditation. “Knee pain” can become an “object of meditation” similar to “the breath,” For example, while meditating, when my mind wanders, I bring my attention back to my “pains in my knees.” Take as an example, “pain in my left knee.” Location: Where is "pain" located in my knee? Can I “pinpoint” its location? Center? Periphery? Can I locate what’s outside its periphery? What happens when I sense the center, periphery, and outside the periphery at one time? As my mind...

Doing, Gaining Insight & Being In A Yoga Nidra Meditation

A Yoga Nidra Meditation can be a very busy meditation. We provide meditators a “to-do list." Note Objects of Awareness Rotate Consciousness Around an Object Sense an Object as an Object without Thought Breathe Into an Object Work With an Object's Opposite Locate an Object's Center/Periphery Watch an Object Arise, Unfold and Dissolve in Awareness Drop the attachment (attraction or version) to an object in that "I-am" as in "I am restless" and dissolve into our True Nature Abide in Awareness You can use one or more of these techniques to work with whatever arises in a Yoga Nidra session. In...

Mindfulness Theories & Practices #24: Stillness Matters

Stillness Matters. As we bring our mind/body into stillness, we are able (i) to release tensions and struggle, allowing us to abide in a Vast Openness. Relaxation happens; (ii) to accept “revelations” -- insights appear; (iii) to witness the unfolding and coming into being self, matter and the Universe.  We observe creation; and (iv) to access the ever-unfolding and expansion nature of being -- We experience our True Nature. In stillness, we get the insight that there is “something” beyond our three states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. That there is always an “N+1 state” that is coming into...

Mindfulness Theories & Practices #23: Turning the Light Back On...

The meditation instruction was: Turn the Light back on Itself Use your mind to "mind your Mind" Be conscious of "being Conscious" Be aware of "being Aware"   As my mind wandered, I brought it back to my Mind As my consciousness strayed, I brought it back to Consciousness As my awareness wandered, I brought it back to Awareness This is me meditating Me moving away from an object of meditation Me noting the moving away Me moving back Over & over & over again This me meditating. This is "the meditation." This is me turning the Light back on...
