Today, when I paused to consider my 75 Breaths, I decided to note the movements in my abdomen as I inhaled and exhaled—breathing in, abdomen expanding, 75—breathing out, abdomen contracting,74. I try to keep the count until I reach zero. Sometimes my abdomen’s expansion and contraction are noticeable. Sometimes they are imperceptible. What I find challenging is sometimes the space/time between expanding and contracting and expanding becomes so long that I let go of “counting.” Sometimes, I “drop the counting” and just focus on the movement of my abdomen.

Try it. Let me know what you observe.

One shared observation by many who practice Insight (Vipassana) Meditation is that when we bring our awareness to something, like abdominal breathing, the nature of the thing changes. In this case, my breathing rate changes when I start “watching it.” There’s a corresponding principle in quantum mechanics: the behavior of photon changes when we attempt to observe (measure) it.
