At Simon Says Yoga, we explored “Strawberry Fields Forever,” diving into imagination, perception, and fluidity. Mindful listening revealed new layers in the music, while meditation invited us to embrace uncertainty. A participant shared how “Magical Mystery Tour,” their first album, shaped their journey. We reflected on trusting life’s flow and how music stays with us, shaping and supporting us over time.

Investigating Perception and Inner Worlds

Our hybrid session at Simon Says Yoga (www.SimonSaysYoga.com) on Friday, February 21, 2025, took us deep into the world of Strawberry Fields Forever. We explored imagination, perception, and the fluid nature of reality. The song’s dreamlike quality guided our meditation and reflection, allowing us to examine how we see and experience the world.

Listening to Strawberry Fields Forever is not just hearing a song—it’s stepping into an altered state of awareness. The melody, shifting tones, and layered instrumentation create a sense of floating between reality and dream. We asked: How does imagination help us navigate life’s complexities? How do perception and memory shape our experience?

The session opened with mindful listening. Focusing on sound and lyrics, we noticed details often overlooked—how Lennon’s voice wavered between certainty and doubt, how the music mimicked the feeling of drifting. Meditation deepened this exploration, inviting participants to visualize an open field, a space of boundless possibility.

Fluidity and Grounding

A key theme emerged: How do we find freedom in fluidity? Walking through an imagined Strawberry Field, participants noticed how landscapes shifted with each step—solid ground giving way to openness, boundaries dissolving. Meditation became an investigation, not just a practice of stillness but a way of examining how we construct reality.

The Rumi quote—”Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”—resonated with our discussion. What happens when we let go of rigid ideas? How does creativity emerge when we stop holding so tightly to certainty?

Music as Meditation

Different interpretations of the song offered new insights. Richie Havens’ version offered a soulful grounding, while the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s orchestral arrangements transformed the song into an expansive meditation. Without lyrics, Strawberry Fields Forever became a feeling rather than a statement.

One participant shared a connection to Magical Mystery Tour, the first album they purchased as a teenager. Strawberry Fields Forever was on that album, making it a formative part of their musical journey. Revisiting it brought back memories, reinforcing how music stays with us, shaping and supporting us through the years.

Applying the Practice

The session closed with a reflection: How can we approach current challenges with openness and creativity? In the lyrics, Lennon surrenders to uncertainty. We explored trusting life’s flow, welcoming the unexpected with curiosity instead of resistance.
