During our Listening and Meditation Jam Session on December 11, 2023, someone asked a tricky question: “What is The Mind?” Ironically, we can answer this using meditation, which lets us experience and understand our minds.
Think of your mind as a busy street full of thoughts, feelings, and sensations. When you focus on this busy street, you notice the traffic flow and people and begin understanding their patterns. In our minds, we call these objects and activities cognitions. Observing them teaches us about where they reside and how they work together. Attention to them helps us see how our thoughts and feelings influence our worldview, decisions, and actions.
To start, approach “The Mind” as that aspect of you that processes “experiences” and makes “meaning” of them. As your “inner world.” As Awareness of a continuous stream of sensations, thoughts, and emotions.
Now, use meditation to examine that approach. Use your mind as the thing you’re studying and the tool to study it.
When you do this, you’ll see that meditation is far more than just a way to relax. It’s a journey to understand what “The Mind” is and isn’t.
